Nov 13

Saturday, November 26, 2016 will be the sixth anniversary of Small Business Saturday. We have American Express® to thank for the now annual tradition honoring small businesses in the US. Each year since 2011, the US Senate passes a resolution recognizing the Small Business Saturday for the year the resolution is passed. On September 14, 2016, the senate passed the resolution recognizing November 26, 2016 as Small Business Saturday for 2016.

According to this article on SBA.gov:

Small business is BIG!

  • The 28 million small businesses in America account for 54% of all U.S. sales.
  • Small businesses provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970s.
  • The 600,000 plus franchised small businesses in the U.S. account for 40% of all retail sales and provide jobs for some 8 million people.
  • The small business sector in America occupies 30-50% of all commercial space, an estimated 20-34 billion square feet.

So, after Turkey Day, instead of heading to the mall, spend some time with your family, or go to a movie. On Friday, get outside, or go bowling; you know you’ll need to work off those extra calories! Then, on Saturday, November 26th, head downtown to your local shops and restaurants. Show your love by supporting your community.

Better yet, hit the local Farmer’s Market before Thursday to purchase the product you’ll need to make that big Thanksgiving meal. Make shopping local a part of your regular routine. As with anything, the more you do it, the sooner it becomes habit.

You’ll give the business owners something to be thankful about, but what you might not know is that you’ll give yourself something to be thankful about. More of the money spent in local economies stays in those local economies. That’s right, shopping local helps boost your local economy, so let’s boost away!
